The essentials

Static vs dynamic

Static codes encode the destination directly — free and permanent, but you can’t change them. Dynamic codes point to a short redirect you can update later and usually include scan analytics.

Design rules

  • Keep strong contrast: dark code on a light background.
  • Leave a quiet zone (blank margin) around the code.
  • Print at least about 2 cm (0.8 in) wide for close-range scanning; scale up for distance.
  • Logos are fine if you use higher error correction and test.

Always add a call to action

“Scan for the menu” or “Scan to book” beats a bare code. Tell people what they get.

Test before you print

Scan with several phones, in low light, and at the real viewing distance. Check that the landing page loads fast on mobile data.

Tracking

Add UTM parameters to the destination URL so scans show up in your analytics by campaign and placement.

Security

Use HTTPS destinations, avoid public link shorteners you don’t control, and watch for tampered stickers placed over legitimate codes.
